No see ums Bite Treatment

No see ums BitesNo see ums are the common name of a group of tiny, flying insects that can be found throughout North America. Only 1-4 millimeters long they plague families and travelers in the outdoors with their bites.  No see ums are known to science as the 4000 species in the family Ceratopogonidae and are related to the black flies. To anyone who lives in or goes into the wilds they are called biting midges, midges, punkies, sand flies, no-see-ums and many other local names.

No see ums’ habitats are anywhere where there is moisture to lay their eggs. Beeches, swamps, creeks, lakes, pools, ponds, anywhere there is standing water for the few days required for their eggs to hatch. It is not only beyond the cities that they come to feast on us. A patch of water on a construction site, garden or even from air conditioning units can become a breeding ground.

Some of the species are so small they can pass through regular window screens or tent netting. Only specialist clothing with micro fine netting can give complete protection against No see ums bites.

It is only the female no see ums that bite. They seek blood to enable their eggs to mature. So successful are they at breeding that no see ums can be found in vast numbers, often visible as black swarms in the morning or evening.

No see ums bite treatement needed A single no see ums bite can cause irritation far beyond what might be expected from such a tiny creature. Itching and pain can be much worse than mosquito bites and go on for four or five days, sometimes longer. A red wheal develops that may be an inch or more across. When this is multiplied by sometimes upwards of a hundred bites the results can be extreme.

It is not unheard of to have cases of upwards of fifty no see ums bites resulting in inflammation, itching and pain for weeks and requiring medical attention with antibiotics and steroid medication. Some no see ums bites result in inflammatory celulitis, again requiring medical attention.

How long does a tube last?

  2. Admin says:

    Hi Maria,

The tube is 3oz, how long it lasts really depends on how often you end up using it.
However, it will likely last you for months if you were to use it for bug bites only.
    Regards,

    Rodger

I can attest to it working for bug bites – it is all my kids ask for when they are bitten (or hurt in any other way). Wonderful product.
